Samsung Wants to Launch 600MP Camera Sensors

Samsung 600MP camera

This century has been revolutionized with mobile cameras. You do not have to hold the big fat DSLR’s to get perfect HDR pictures.samsung is going to launch 600MP of camera sooner or later.

Mobile cameras have improved remarkably in the past few years, all thanks to mobile chips which use image sensors to convert light into binary or digital form.

To increase the resolution of the camera one has to increase the light absorption capability of the pixels used in mobile phones. Samsung used Nona cell technology to increase the light absorption procedure to create 108 Mega Pixels of a camera (MP).

In the current market 0.8μm is the standard for the image sensors i.e. the minimum possible size of a pixel adopted by the market. Samsung in 2019 was the first to introduce 0.7μm pixels image sensors. Because as mentioned in an article by Mr. Park that to engineers of Samsung the limitations of technology are a way to motivate and challenge their innovative limits.

600MP –More Than Human Sensing Capability

As said by Yongin Park, EVP, Head of Sensor Business Team of Samsung, Samsung have been leading the high resolution, small-pixel sensors.

Samsung has been planning to continue this trend through 2020 and beyond. Samsung is very well prepared to create the succeeding wave of innovation in technology. Samsung with a wide-ranging portfolio of products is ready to deliver the modern requirements of the devices.

Human eye can sense the light from 450 to 750 nanometer (nm) of wavelengths i.e. almost 500 MP’s. Now Samsung has announced a camera sensor that would be able to shoot up to 600MP, as said by Yongin Park.

Making a 600 megapixel of camera would be a revolution because things we would not be able to see through naked eye would easily be captured by the device you can carry around so easily, but there is a long way to reach that goal.

Diverse Target Market:

Samsung is not only targeting to put the sensors in mobiles but they are also going to target the audience of drones, agriculture, autonomous vehicles, medical field, and internet of things (IoT). They also hinted on the use of infrared and UV cameras to be used in the medical and agriculture field.

In agriculture it could be used in quality control. While on the other hand, in medical sector, this much capacity would be able to see the microbes which we might not otherwise be able to see with naked eyes.

The new sensors with UV perception will be able to differentiate between cancerous and healthy cells.

It is a long-term project and Samsung has not yet decided the timeline for the project, but this is for sure that Samsung will definitely be launching various other image sensors before the 600MP to exceed its current limit of 108MP’s which uses nano technology.

As it is rumored that Samsung will soon be launching a 192 MP camera in a very near future. Seems like Samsung is going step by step to reach the goal of 600MP.

But the question remains, will Samsung be able to make Sensors that would go beyond our senses (sight, taste, smell) that unquestionably become part of our quotidian routine or the bottleneck for the sensor limit will be achieved before reaching the 600MP limit?
